President Han meets American Institute in Taiwan Chairperson Laura Rosenberger and the delegation. President Daniel K.Y. Han: “Thank the US President Biden for his emphasis on the importance of security and peace across the Taiwan Strait.”

At 10 a.m. on April 3, President Han met AIT Chairperson Laura Rosenberger and her delegation. In attendance were Vice President Dr. Johnny C. Chiang, Legislator Ko Ju-chun and Legislator Chang Chi-kai and International Affairs Department Director Kevin C.F. Lin.

Before the meeting, President Han invited Chairperson Rosenberger and four delegation members from the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the Department of State and American Institute in Taiwan for group photos. In his remarks, he extended a warm welcome to Chairperson Rosenberger and delegation members to the Legislative Yuan. He thanked them for coming despite the big earthquake today, showing US cordial friendship with the people of Taiwan. He pointed out that in the 11th Legislative Yuan, 41% legislators are women. Among the 113 seats, 55 are newly elected. He highlighted that 72 legislators are the members of Legislative Yuan USA Caucus (LUC), demonstrating cross-party legislators are keen to engage themselves with the United States. He hoped to continue to deepen friendship with members of the US Congress. President Han gave special thanks to President Biden for placing emphasis on the importance of security and peace across the Taiwan Strate in his State of Union Address in March this year. This was an important reassurance to the people of Taiwan. It was also very important for the president-elect Lai and the 23 million of people of Taiwan to see Chairperson Rosenberger visit Taiwan to convey a message of friendship and support for the stability of Taiwan-US relations.

President Han continued to emphasize that the three political parties in the Legislative Yuan often debate on political issues but have a consensus on issues related with national defense and foreign affairs. He hoped that Chairperson Rosenberger will relay this message to the US government and Congress.

After the press and media left the room, a closed-door meeting was conducted. After President Han introduced attending legislators, both sides exchanged views on Taiwan-US relations and cross-strait issues, enhancement of Taiwan’s national defense autonomy capabilities, high-tech industrial development and cooperation, the functions and roles of the Legislative Yuan, further promotion of parliamentary exchanges between Taiwan and the United States and the relations among the US, China and Taiwan. Both sides had candid discussion and exchange for about an hour in an amicable atmosphere. The meeting was concluded after exchange of gifts and taking group photos again.
