On the morning of May 2 at 11:00 AM, Deputy Secretary-General of the Legislative Yuan, Chang Yu-jung, attended the inauguration ceremony of the Republic of China and Paraguay Parliamentary Friendship Association on behalf of President Daniel K.Y. Han. The association was initiated by Legislator Liao Wei-hsiang. Distinguished guests at the event included Legislators Su Ching-chuan, Hsieh Yi-fong, Weng Hsiao-ling, Hsu Yu-chen, Wu Chun-cheng, Wang Yu-min, Lin Te-fu, and Ko Ju-Chun. Also in attendance were Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Remus Li-kuo Chen, and Ambassador Carlos José Fleitas Rodríguez from the Embassy of the Republic of Paraguay, among others.
The inauguration ceremony began with opening remarks from the initiator, Legislator Liao Wei-hsiang. Following the adoption of the association's organizational charter and the election of the president and vice president, Deputy Secretary-General Chang Yu-jung delivered a speech on behalf of the Legislative Yuan. Deputy Secretary-General Chang noted that although Taiwan and Latin America are separated by vast distances, the bilateral ties between Taiwan and Paraguay have continually expanded and deepened over the years in various fields, including economics, trade, culture, education, agriculture, industrial technology, and healthcare.
Deputy Secretary-General Chang further mentioned that on the 15th of last month (April), Congress and Senate President of the Republic of Paraguay, Silvio Adalberto Ovelar Benítez, led a delegation to visit Taiwan and paid a courtesy call to President Han at the Legislative Yuan. During the meeting, President Han expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Ovelar Benítez and the Paraguayan government for their steadfast support of Taiwan's international participation and for their multiple public declarations of support for Taiwan.
Deputy Secretary-General Chang concluded by highly praising Legislator Liao for his principle of "entering politics for the smiles on others' faces." He emphasized that the establishment of the Republic of China and Paraguay Parliamentarians Friendship Association today is the best embodiment of this belief. It allows Taiwan and Paraguay to maintain their friendship and interactions with smiles and to expand cooperation fields and strengthen partnerships between the two countries. He assured that the Legislative Yuan will do its utmost to assist with any necessary administrative matters in the future.
The inauguration ceremony concluded with a group photo of all distinguished guests. This was followed by congratulatory speeches from Vice Minister Remus Li-kuo Chen of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Carlos José Fleitas Rodríguez of the Republic of Paraguay, Legislator Weng Hsiao-ling, and others. The event lasted approximately 30 minutes and ended on a warm and joyful note.
