After taking a group photo with legislators in attendance and delegation members, Vice President Chiang, on behalf of President Daniel K.Y. Han and the Legislative Yuan, extended a warm welcome to friends from the Japan Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry for coming back home. He told the visiting members that he just finished a 13-day trip to Europe this morning, in which he visited the Czech Republic, Span and Italy, met with many pro-Taiwan parliament members, and gathered with overseas compatriots in Europe for exchanges and interactions. He also attended the Annual Conference for Overseas Chinese in Europe held in Spain.

Vice President Chiang further noted that he was delighted to see a mix of old and new faces, with many old friends as well as new ones. Apart from welcoming new friends, he thanked the delegation members for their constant support for Taiwan. Although they work hard for their families and careers in Japan, the delegation members have consistently cared about Taiwan, making great efforts for Taiwan’s future. With the recent improvement in relations between Taiwan and Japan, which continue to deepen and broaden, the outstanding contribution of overseas Taiwanese in Japan cannot go unnoticed.

Vice President Chiang shared that in the upcoming weekend, he and 11 other cross-party members of the Legislative Yuan, at the invitation of Representative Seishirō Etō, Member of the House of Representative and President of the Japan-Taiwan Friendship Association, will depart for Ōita Prefecture, Kyūshū, Japan, to participate in the first-ever friendly soccer match with members of parliament of Japan. He expressed his hope that the friendship between parliament members and the political sector in Japan and Taiwan will be further strengthened through this sports exchange. Vice President Chiang also mentioned that this friendly soccer match would not be his first parliamentary diplomacy trip to Japan. This march, he also led a group of 13 cross-party legislators to Tokyo to attend the 52nd General Assembly and 86th Council Meeting of the Asia Pacific Parliamentarians’ Union (APPU). The results of parliamentary diplomacy have been very fruitful, with the most noteworthy being securing the hosting rights for the 53rd General Assembly and 87th Council Meeting of the APPU in 2025.

In addition, Vice President Chiang shared with the guests that according to the Japan National Tourism Organization, the number of Taiwan’s visitors to Japan reached 4.2 million in 2023, coming in second place for tourists from overseas in Japan. In the same year, Taiwanese tourists spent a staggering JP¥778.6 billion (approximately NT$163.5 billion), topping the list of all foreign visitors to Japan in spending power and hitting a record high. This shows the significance of people's exchanges in fostering the friendship between Taiwan and Japan. Vice President Chiang gave special thanks to the Taiwanese businessmen living in Japan for their long-term support and efforts. It is thanks to them that both nations have fostered close partnerships in different fields and can move toward a future that benefits both.

Lastly, Vice President Chiang stressed that as both Taiwan and Japan share the values of freedom and democracy, both countries will continue to establish a strong and enduring relationship based on these shared values. The Legislative Yuan is not only the representative body of the people, but also the home of overseas compatriots around the globe. With 113 legislators ready to serve whenever needed, the Legislative Yuan will continue to provide strong and unwavering support to overseas compatriots, acting as their safest haven.

President of the Japan Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry Luo Hung-Chien thanked Vice President Chiang for his warm reception as he just stepped out of the plane from an overseas trip this morning. The Japan Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce was established nearly 80 years ago, with a mission to enhance the friendship, cooperation, and rights protection among Taiwanese living in Japan, as well as to build and maintain the friendly relationship between Taiwan and Japan. Though both countries do not have formal diplomatic ties, the long-term support and help of overseas compatriots have contributed to the continuous growth of Taiwan and Japan’s partnerships in areas including economy, culture and tourism. President Luo said that as Taiwan’s democracy has reached maturity, a remarkable achievement, he hopes that the world can see more of Taiwan’s virtues.
