President Daniel K.Y. Han of the Legislative Yuan led a cross-party delegation to the United States at 5:35 p.m. on January 18 to attend the 60th U.S. Presidential Inauguration. The delegation included Legislators Ko Chih-En and Wang Ting-Yu, co-chairs of the Legislative Yuan USA Caucus, along with KMT Legislators Ko Ju-Chun and Lee Yen-Hsiu, DPP Legislators Chen Kuan-Ting and Kuo Yu-Ching, and TPP Legislator Chen Gau-Tzu, totaling eight members. Legislative Yuan Vice President and honorary president of the Legislative Yuan USA Caucus Dr. Johnny C. Chiang, Secretary-General Chou Wan-Lai, and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Remus Li-Kuo Chen also attended the send-off.
President Han stated in an interview that the Legislative Yuan, as Taiwan’s highest representative body of public opinion, hopes to convey the sincerest and warmest congratulations from Taiwan’s 23 million people to U.S. President-elect Trump, Vice President-elect Vance, and the new administration. Although the outdoor events of the U.S. presidential inauguration have been canceled due to weather conditions, congratulatory delegations from around the world continue to arrive in Washington, D.C., to extend their regards. The delegation remains committed to fulfilling its mission with dedication and enthusiasm. President Han concluded by once again expressing gratitude to President Lai for inviting him to lead the delegation. With support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the overseas Taiwanese community, and think tanks, the delegation, together with cross-party legislators, will strive to successfully fulfill its mission.
Vice President Dr. Johnny C. Chiang of the Legislative Yuan, honorary president of the Legislative Yuan USA Caucus, stated in his remarks that Taiwan-U.S. relations are of paramount importance to Taiwan. He expressed gratitude to President Han for taking on the significant responsibility of leading the delegation to the U.S. While he was unable to accompany the delegation due to his duty to preside over Legislative Yuan sessions, he expressed confidence that, with the presence of Co-Chairs Legislators Ko Chih-En and Wang Ting-Yu, the visit would be successful and mark a new milestone in Taiwan-U.S. relations.
Legislator Ko Chih-En, co-chair of the Legislative Yuan USA Caucus, stated that despite domestic political differences, the delegation stands united in representing Taiwan abroad. Upholding the spirit of "braving the storm and forging ahead with unwavering resolve," the delegation sets out carrying the heartfelt blessings of the Taiwanese people. Whether the delegation will be able to attend the inauguration ceremony remains uncertain. However, Legislator Ko is confident that other diplomatic engagements and missions will be successfully accomplished, further elevating Taiwan-U.S. relations.
Legislator Wang Ting-Yu expressed special gratitude to President Lai for inviting President Han to organize Taiwan’s delegation, demonstrating Taiwan’s cross-party commitment to Taiwan-U.S. relations and conveying congratulations to U.S. President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect Vance. This visit also aims to demonstrate the cross-party commitment to safeguarding Taiwan’s democracy and engaging with the United States, a nation that also embodies democratic values. Notably, with the U.S. House of Representatives having recently passed provisions to prevent double taxation and swiftly resolve cross-border income tax duplication, further progress in advancing bilateral relations is expected.
Finally, Legislator Chen Gau-Tzu expressed her great honor in joining Taiwan’s delegation. She stated that President Lai has entrusted the delegation with three key missions: conveying congratulations on President-elect Trump’s inauguration, deepening Taiwan-U.S. friendship, and enhancing bilateral cooperation. Regardless of any challenges along the way, the delegation remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for Taiwan in the United States.
After the interview, President Han led the cross-party legislators in a group photo and extended his best wishes for the delegation’s successful mission as well as the enduring friendship between Taiwan and the United States.
