On the evening of May 8, Legislative Yuan President Daniel K.Y. Han hosted a banquet at the Kang-Yuan restaurant of the Legislative Yuan in honor of a homecoming delegation from the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of Washington, D.C. (CCBA). President Han was accompanied by KMT Legislator Chen Yeong-Kang, DPP Legislator Chen Pei-Yu, TPP Legislator Lin Kuo-Chen, International Affairs Department Director Kevin C.F. Lin, and Vice Minister of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Chang Liang-Ming.
President Han warmly welcomed the delegation to the Legislative Yuan, noting that legislators from three political parties were present, symbolizing the shared recognition and deep gratitude for the contributions of overseas compatriots across both the ruling and opposition camps. He explained to the delegates that the Legislative Yuan operates under a unicameral system with only 113 seats, a relatively small number compared to most Western countries. Nonetheless, each legislator bears the significant responsibility of serving the people. He added that the presence of cross-party legislators at the banquet reflected the Legislative Yuan’s united front in recognizing the long-standing contributions of overseas compatriots, transcending political lines.
President Han said with emotion that overseas compatriots have long been praised as the “mother of the R.O.C.’s revolution.” Whenever Taiwan has faced adversity, overseas compatriots have consistently shown unwavering support—not only through generous donations but also through selfless dedication. He specifically highlighted the CCBA's 74-year history since its founding in 1951. For decades, the association has held National Day flag-raising ceremonies and promoted Chinese cultural traditions in Washington, D.C., allowing the R.O.C. flag to proudly fly abroad—an achievement worthy of admiration. President Han also expressed deep appreciation for the overseas compatriots’ proactive support during major challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating a profound emotional bond with their homeland–Taiwan.
He further stated that generations of ethnic Chinese who ventured overseas have laid root and thrived wherever they settled. President Han added that, while far from home, overseas compatriots have never forgotten Taiwan, always keeping it close to their hearts, no matter their success. With approximately 50 million overseas Chinese around the world, Taiwan considers this global network a precious source of talents and emotional support. Legislators across party lines greatly value the overseas compatriot community and extend their highest respect. President Han finally expressed hope to deepen and strengthen ties with overseas compatriots.
Chairman Hsu Wan-Yu of the CCBA expressed his gratitude to President Han and the attending legislators for their warm reception. He said the delegation has felt deeply honored by the hospitality across various sectors in Taiwan. He continued, noting the delegation comprised CCBA leaders alongside chairmen and key members from 15 affiliated overseas compatriot organizations, all prominent figures in their communities. He also stated that through this visit and meetings with government agencies, the delegation has gained a better understanding of Taiwan’s development and intends to share these insights with the overseas compatriot community in the U.S., promoting Taiwan’s progress and achievements.
Chairman Hsu continued by emphasizing that the CCBA has firmly upheld the core values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law since its founding. The association supported Dr. Sun Yat-Sen’s revolutionary endeavors in its early years and continues to carry forward that spirit, advocating for the democratic values of the R.O.C. on the international stage.
Following the remarks, both sides exchanged commemorative gifts. This was followed by a toast given by President Han, welcoming the delegation. Subsequently, President Han, together with the legislators and delegation members, posed for group photos to mark the occasion before officially commencing the banquet. The event lasted approximately two hours, concluding on a high note amid a lively and joyful ambiance.
