Legislative Yuan Vice President Johnny C. Chiang successfully completes third day of parliamentary diplomacy mission in Singapore
On December 11, Vice President of the Legislative Yuan Dr. Johnny C. Chiang (江啟臣) visited NTUC FairPrice, along with KMT Legislators Dr. Cheng Cheng-Chien, Hung Mong-Kai, Lu Yu-Ling, Huang Chien-Hao, and Dr. Lin Chien-Chi. They were greeted and hosted by NTUC President Ah Yiam Tng, who introduced NTUC FairPrice’s operations and sales model to the delegation. President Tng noted that with more than 100 outlets across Singapore, NTUC FairPrice is an important leader in the local retail industry. He also noted that in 2024, the supermarket chain recorded a total turnover of S$4.5 billion and employed more than 14,000 staff, underscoring its significant corporate scale and market influence.
President Tng explained that thanks to Singapore’s free trade policy, most goods enter the country duty-free, with imported products accounting for 95% of the supermarket inventory. He mentioned that Taiwanese agricultural products stand out among the imports, and that fresh fruits, vegetables, and pork are highly favored by Singaporean consumers. President Tng further pointed out that NTUC FairPrice, built upon a co-operative system, is committed to providing members and the public with high-quality, affordable daily essentials, while emphasizing the improvement of labor welfare as its core mission. He remarked that in addition to collaborating closely with the government and businesses, NTUC FairPrice also actively gives back to society through various discount initiatives to fulfill its corporate social responsibility.
Both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on several topics, including securing the supply of daily necessities within a free trade environment, promoting high-quality Taiwanese agricultural products, and exploring the social responsibilities and labor welfare initiatives of co-operatives. The meeting lasted approximately one hour and concluded successfully with the exchange of commemorative gifts and a group photo.
Vice President Chiang’s visit to Singapore not only demonstrated the Legislative Yuan’s steadfast support for the Taiwanese business community, but also yielded tangible results through discussions with experts and think tanks. The exchanges are believed to be conducive for future political activities and policy deliberations, bringing the mission to a successful close.
