Legislative Yuan President Daniel K.Y. Han hosts dinner for homecoming delegation from the Africa Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce; President Han: There is a moving story behind every Taiwanese businessperson; wherever the sun shines, Taiwanese businesspeople can be found.
On the evening of September 30, Legislative Yuan President Daniel K.Y. Han (韓國瑜) hosted a dinner banquet for a homecoming delegation from the Africa Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce (ATCC), accompanied by DPP Legislator Chung Chia-Pin, vice president of the Association of Overseas Taiwanese Businessmen of the Legislative Yuan. Also in attendance were DPP Legislators Dr. Wang Cheng-Hsu and Chen Pei-Yu, KMT Legislator Adm. Chen Yeong-Kang, and TPP Legislator Dr. Hung Yu-Hsiang.
President Han began by extending a sincere welcome to the delegation. He noted that more than three decades had passed since the ATCC was established in 1995. He recalled that in those early years, many Taiwanese businesspeople set out for Africa with only one suitcase and a one-way ticket, achieving success through hard work. He remarked that they have helped build a thriving Taiwanese business community all over the world. He lauded Taiwanese business people, noting that behind each of them lies a moving story and that wherever the sun shines, Taiwanese businesspeople can be found.
President Han went on to mention that despite its limited land and natural resources, Taiwan has progressed from establishing export processing zones to developing the Hsinchu Science Park (HSP). He highlighted that today, more than four decades later, companies in the HSP generate trillions of New Taiwan dollars in annual output value, create numerous jobs, contribute tax revenue, and deliver returns to shareholders, enabling Taiwan to shine on the world stage. He noted that besides high-tech industries, Taiwan is also home to many “hidden champions” across all areas of daily life, including food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and recreation. He praised Taiwanese businesspeople for their leading positions in global markets for products ranging from garments, hats, and sports balls to bicycles, cutlery, and Christmas lights, earning Taiwan worldwide recognition.
President Han expressed appreciation to overseas Taiwanese businesspeople for keeping Taiwan close to their hearts while managing their businesses and for frequently giving back to their local communities. He commended Taiwanese businesspeople for establishing the “Friendship House” in Africa for charitable initiatives. He also highlighted their generous contributions to help Taiwan and its people in times of natural disaster and emergency, including the 921 Earthquake, the barrier-lake disaster in Hualien, and flooding in southern Taiwan. He emphasized that legislators across party lines deeply appreciate these contributions and value overseas Taiwanese businesspeople.
President Han stressed that he attaches great importance to Chinese-language education and recommended that the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) work with academic institutions to promote Chinese-language education for the next generation of overseas compatriots. In light of Taiwan’s diplomatic challenges, legislators from all three parties hold overseas compatriots in high regard and will also support the OCAC’s budget. He also expressed the hope of organizing a cross-party legislative delegation to visit Africa next year to show care and support for Taiwanese compatriots in the region.
In closing, President Han noted that the Double Tenth Day (National Day) was approaching and warmly invited overseas compatriots to join the festivities and celebrate the Republic of China’s birthday together. He also wished all Taiwanese businesspeople prosperity in their businesses and peace and well-being for their families, and encouraged them to return to Taiwan more often.
In her remarks, Ming Tsui-Chung, president of the ATCC, thanked President Han and legislators from across party lines for taking the time to receive the delegation. She noted that although Taiwanese businesspeople live overseas, they always keep Taiwan’s development close to their hearts. She introduced the delegation members one by one, including many young Taiwanese businesspeople in Africa, and expressed the hope that the younger generation would continue to support Taiwan.
The two sides then exchanged commemorative gifts before the dinner formally began. The banquet lasted approximately two hours, with the hosts and guests enjoying lively conversations and interactions, and concluded successfully in a warm and friendly atmosphere. (2026/09/30)
