Legislative Yuan President Daniel K.Y. Han receives delegation led by U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence; President Han: We look forward to deepening Taiwan-U.S. bilateral relations and promoting cooperation across industries. On the afternoon of October 6, Legislative Yuan President Daniel K.Y. Han (韓國瑜) received a delegation led by U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. President Han was accompanied by KMT Legislator Hsu Chiao-Hsin, DPP Legislator Dr. Chuang Jui-Hsiung, TPP Legislator Dr. Hung Yu-Hsiang, and Acting Deputy Director Michael Pignatello of the Taipei Office of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT/T).

President Han began by welcoming Senator Bennet. He noted that, in February this year, Senator Bennet joined a bipartisan group of U.S. senators and representatives in sending a letter to the Legislative Yuan and cross-party leaders expressing concern about the review progress of the special defense budget. He also noted that, ahead of the meeting between President Trump and President Xi in May this year, Senator Bennet joined 11 other senators from both parties in writing to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to reiterate their concern for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. President Han expressed his sincere gratitude for these efforts, which demonstrate the importance Senator Bennet attaches to Taiwan’s security.

President Han went on to highlight the close economic and trade ties between Taiwan and the U.S. He emphasized that passage of the United States-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act in the U.S. Senate would be crucial to bilateral investment and industrial cooperation, and expressed his sincere hope that Senator Bennet would help secure the bill’s passage.

President Han emphasized that, although Taiwan accounts for only 0.03% of the world’s land area and 0.3% of its population, it produces 3% of the world’s industrial output. He noted that in addition to the globally renowned Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Taiwan boasts a broad range of highly competitive industries. He stressed that Taiwan greatly needs the support of its international friends and looks forward to expanding engagement and cooperation with partners across all sectors in the U.S. In closing, President Han wished Senator Bennet a successful visit and encouraged him to sample local cuisine from across Taiwan.

During bilateral discussions, Legislator Hsu mentioned that she was a member of the Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee and that the passage of the special defense budget and the Act on Strengthening Defense Autonomy and Developing the Unmanned Vehicle Industry demonstrates the Legislative Yuan’s consensus on Taiwan’s self-defense. She expressed that the U.S. is a vital ally of Taiwan and thanked Senator Bennet for his long-standing support for Taiwan.

Legislator Chuang stated that although the three parties in the Legislative Yuan hold differing views on domestic issues, they share a common commitment to strengthening Taiwan’s ability to defend itself. He noted that Taiwan is a reliable partner of the U.S. in industries such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), and drones. He expressed hope that the U.S. Congress would continue to leverage bipartisan support to urge the executive branch to fulfill its security commitments to Taiwan.

Legislator Hung recalled accompanying President Han on a visit to the U.S. in June this year, which included a tour of TSMC’s Arizona facility. He expressed hope that the U.S. federal and local governments would provide assistance with infrastructure and visas for skilled personnel traveling to the U.S., helping to spur investment in the U.S. by Taiwanese companies and deepen bilateral cooperation in technology industries.

Subsequently, the two sides exchanged views extensively on deepening relations between Taiwan and the U.S., promoting industrial cooperation, and global geopolitics. The meeting lasted approximately 40 minutes and took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere. It concluded successfully with an exchange of commemorative gifts. (2026/10/06)
