Today (March 22) Legislator Kuan Biling wrote on her Facebook about the current student movement. She analyzes that 24 years ago, the success of a Taiwanese student movement dubbed "the Wild Lily" was due to the inside-outside alliance of student groups, the young opposition Democratic Progressive Party, and the ruling party KMT headed by President Lee Teng-hui. Together they ensured the peaceful conclusion of the protests and hastened the democratization and political transformation in Taiwan. As students occupy the parliament to protest Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement with China, what the Sunflower Movement will achieve hinges on the Speaker of the Legislative Yuan, Wang Jin-pyng, a member of the KMT.

Kuan says the Sunflower Movement confronts the test of our times -- a Cross-Strait relationship with civil society participation. Democracy and social justice depend on how it is resolved. The protesters meet this profound challenge. Under-the-table political dealings between the KMT and China's Communist Party are pushing Taiwan into China's sphere of dominance while squeezing Taiwan's freedom of speech and compromising our cultural integrity. This is a moment of crisis.

She further explains that the big money-government complex monopolizes Cross-Strait policy decisions. The public is excluded from the process and therefore loses control of their destiny. This is a severe blow to our democracy. A tug-of-war is taking place before our eyes -- a Cross-Straight relationship with civil society participation and one contracted between KMT and CCP. The Sunflower Movement demands the former, and its achievement would be a defining moment in our history.

Kuan Biling compares Sunflower to its predecessor the Wild Lily and finds the current movement lacks a crucial component of the tripod alliance of students, DDP, and KMT. We have "Student Movement v.2.0" and the staunch opposition DPP, but she does not see a new KMT. Speaker Wang has shown his courage in breaking away from President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Jiang Yi-huah, but so far has not accepted the movement nor agreed to students' petition. At this historical juncture, he is pushed to the top of the waves, but dares not embrace history.

Kuan appeals to Speaker Wang to come to the parliamentary chamber and visit the students. Tell them no police force will be unleashed upon them and promise them their appeals will be the basis of blue-ribbon negotiations. Once he follows through these measures, the public will, having been inspired by the movement, will help him trail-blaze through a new path. Sunflower after Wild Lily, Wang Jin-pyng after Lee Teng-hwi, all valuable contributors to Taiwan's history.
