Vice President Dr. Johnny C. Chiang of the Legislative Yuan met with a 30-member delegation from the Thai-Taiwan Business Association at 4pm on the afternoon of January 16. He was accompanied by Legislator Chung Chia-Pin, Vice President of the Legislative Yuan Association of Overseas Taiwanese Businessmen; KMT Legislator Liao Hsien-Hsiang; Legislator Liu Chien-Kuo, Chair of the Taiwan-Thailand Inter-Parliamentary Amity Association; Joshua Jhao-Syong Ruan, Deputy Minister of the Overseas Community Affairs Council; and Chen Ching-Fang, Secretary of the Department of International Affairs.

Vice President Chiang warmly welcomed the delegation and, together with the attending legislators, took a commemorative photo with the guests. He stated that the Legislative Yuan serves as a "home" for all overseas Taiwanese and expressed his hope that Taiwanese business leaders would frequently "return home" to visit the Legislative Yuan. As the Lunar New Year approaches, the current legislative session (the 2nd session of the 11th Legislative Yuan) is drawing to a close, with intensive budget reviews underway and legislators managing tightly packed schedules. This meeting underscores the Legislative Yuan’s strong commitment to supporting Taiwanese businesses abroad.

Vice President Chiang further emphasized that Thailand is the second-largest economy in ASEAN, and the remarkable achievements of Taiwanese businesses in Thailand are clear to all. From traditional manufacturing and OEM industries to modern electronics and high-tech sectors, Taiwanese enterprises have established a strong presence across many fields. Vice President Chiang reflected on his visit to Thailand last year (2024) and his meetings with the Taiwanese business community, emphasizing the immense potential for bilateral cooperation. In particular, the signing of the Agreement between the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand (TECO) and the Thailand Trade and Economic Office in Taipei (TTEO) for the Promotion and Protection of Investments last year, along with Thailand’s implementation of a visa exemption for Taiwanese travelers, has not only further strengthened bilateral economic and trade relations but also had a positive impact on exchanges between the peoples of both sides.

Vice President Chiang emphasized that migrant workers from Southeast Asian countries, particularly those from Thailand, have made indispensable contributions to Taiwan’s economic development. Since the pandemic, the number of travelers between Taiwan and Thailand has exceeded one million, fully demonstrating the close ties between the two countries in trade, tourism, and human resources. Looking ahead, the Legislative Yuan will continue to support the implementation of favorable policies to assist Taiwanese businesses in expanding their global presence. In closing, Vice President Chiang wished the delegation a successful and fruitful visit to Taiwan. He also extended his best wishes for the new year, hoping for prosperity, success, and great financial gains.

Looking ahead, he expressed hope for leveraging Taiwan’s advanced technological resources to further enhance the international competitiveness of Taiwanese businesses. He also anticipated that the Legislative Yuan would continue to provide greater regulatory support for the overseas expansion of Taiwanese enterprises.

Legislator Liao Hsien-Hsiang stated that he personally enjoys traveling to Thailand and is deeply impressed by the kindness and hospitality of the Thai people, as well as the country’s rich culinary culture. Legislator Liao highlighted that, amid the U.S.-China trade tensions, many Taiwanese businesses in China have chosen to relocate their investments to Thailand. He expressed hope that the Taiwanese business community in Thailand would generously share their experiences, regardless of when they entered the market, and work together to create more business opportunities.

Chair of the Taiwan-Thailand Inter-Parliamentary Amity Association, Legislator Liu Chien-Kuo, emphasized that the Legislative Yuan has entered the final stage of budget examinations. While different parties hold varying positions and proposals, he expressed hope that his fellow legislators would uphold a pragmatic approach to ensure the proper completion of the budget review process, meeting the expectations of the Taiwanese people.
