President Lai began by welcoming President Han and his delegation, expressing gratitude to him for serving as the leader of Taiwan’s congratulatory delegation. He also thanked KMT legislators Ko Chih-En, Ko Ju-Chun, and Lee Yen-Hsiu, DPP legislators Wang Ting-Yu, Chen Kuan-Ting, and Kuo Yu-Ching, as well as TPP legislator Chen Gau-Tzu, for joining the delegation to the 60th U.S. Presidential Inauguration. The President continued by stating that we all come from the same country—the Republic of China (Taiwan). He emphasized that despite internal party competition, today everyone has come together across party lines. In facing the outside world, we remain united in our efforts to deepen Taiwan-U.S. relations, maximize national interests, defend our shared values of democracy and freedom, and advance our common goal of prosperity. The President reaffirmed that, amid a complex and volatile international landscape, the nation is confronted with numerous formidable challenges. Nevertheless, there is no animosity that cannot be set aside; the paramount priority is national unity. He also entrusted the delegation with three critical tasks: 1. Convey the sincere well wishes of the Taiwanese people, wishing the new U.S. administration a successful inauguration and the continued prosperity of the United States. 2. Reaffirm Taiwan’s steadfast commitment to democracy, emphasizing that Taiwan and the United States share universal democratic values and stand as strong allies in countering the spread of authoritarianism. 3. Establish a new milestone in Taiwan-U.S. relations by fostering deeper cooperation with the new U.S. administration and achieving more significant outcomes. Finally, the President wished the delegation a safe and successful mission.
President Han followed up with his remarks, stating that he was deeply honored to have been invited by President Lai to serve as the leader of Taiwan’s delegation to the 60th U.S. Presidential Inauguration. He expressed his privilege in heading the team to Washington, D.C. to extend the Republic of China’s warmest and most sincere congratulations to the United States. In the past, the President of the Legislative Yuan had also been invited on multiple occasions to undertake this significant mission, not only representing the government of Taiwan but also bearing the responsibility of conveying the sentiments of Taiwan’s 23 million people. He expressed his great honor in assuming this distinguished responsibility, leading a cross-party delegation to the United States to participate in this globally-watched ceremony. In doing so, he will personally extend Taiwan’s warm congratulations to President Trump and his new administration, while aspiring to herald a new chapter in Taiwan-U.S. relations.
President Han further stated that the United States stands as one of the world’s freest and most vibrant nations, as well as a pioneering force in the development of modern representative democracy. In 1776, American Founding Father and political philosopher Thomas Jefferson articulated the principle of "unalienable rights" in the Declaration of Independence. He asserted every individual’s inherent rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, a doctrine that became the cornerstone of the United States’ founding principles. This principle instilled the idea that “all men are created equal” into the very fabric of American society and exerted a profound influence on the political evolution of other democratic nations.
President Han noted that he was pleased that this cross-party delegation, consisting of himself and seven others, included both co-chairs of the Legislative Yuan USA Caucus. He proceeded to introduce the academic credentials and professional expertise of the other seven legislators, highlighting the exceptional composition of four distinguished male and four outstanding female members, which underscored the delegation’s elite caliber. He emphasized that Taiwan’s security is akin to a table supported by four legs. The first leg is safeguarding the Republic of China; the second is protecting democracy and freedom; the third is preserving Taiwan-U.S. relations; and the fourth is maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait. The delegation would be braving the cold weather as they head to the United States to extend their congratulations. President Han once again expressed his gratitude for President Lai’s invitation, noting that all the participating members, regardless of party affiliation, will give their utmost effort. They are ready to extend a warm hand to convey Taiwan’s democracy, goodwill, and passion to every international friend they meet, working tirelessly to fulfill their mission.
President Lai concluded by presenting insulated bottles and hand warmers to President Han and the members of the delegation, followed by a group photo with all the distinguished guests in attendance.
