This afternoon (September 8), Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Chang Yu-Jung of the Legislative Yuan, accompanied by Kevin C.F. Lin, Director of the Department of International Affairs, received a 39-member delegation from the Kanagawa Prefecture Japan-Taiwan Friendship Association.
張副秘書長致詞時表示，謹代表立法院及韓國瑜院長，向來自神奈川縣的好朋友們致上最誠摯的歡迎。他指出，臺灣與日本隔海相望，歷史淵源深厚，民間交流密切頻繁，而「神奈川縣日華親善協會」長年積極推動雙邊友好交流，對於深化臺日關係貢獻良多，特此表達由衷的感謝。
In his remarks, Deputy Secretary-General Chang conveyed, on behalf of the Legislative Yuan and its President Daniel K.Y. Han, his warmest welcome to the dear friends visiting from Kanagawa Prefecture. He noted that Taiwan and Japan, though separated by the sea, share deep historical ties and maintain frequent and close people-to-people exchanges. He expressed his sincere appreciation to the Kanagawa Prefecture Japan-Taiwan Friendship Association for its long-standing dedication to promoting bilateral friendship and for its significant contributions to strengthening Taiwan-Japan relations.

Deputy Secretary-General Chang went on to emphasize that, as the highest temple of democracy in Taiwan, the Legislative Yuan shares with Japan’s National Diet the universal values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. He added that through continued exchanges and dialogue between the two sides, not only can their shared commitment to common values be further strengthened, but a brighter future can also be created for the next generation. He further expressed his hope that this visit would serve as a new opportunity to deepen Taiwan-Japan relations, and that both sides would engage in broader cooperation in areas such as culture, the economy, and youth exchange in the years to come. Deputy Secretary-General Chang added that the people of Taiwan deeply cherish their enduring friendship with Japan, and that he looked forward to working hand in hand with the distinguished guests from Kanagawa Prefecture to realize a shared vision of prosperity. In his remarks, House of Representatives Member Tanaka Kazunori, Honorary President of the Kanagawa Prefecture Japan-Taiwan Friendship Association, first expressed his gratitude to Deputy Secretary-General Chang for the warm reception. He noted that since its establishment, the Kanagawa Prefecture Japan-Taiwan Friendship Association has organized annual visits to Taiwan, and that this year’s delegation is especially meaningful as it marks the Association’s 60th anniversary. He further remarked that Yokohama Chinatown, located in Kanagawa Prefecture, boasts a long and storied history, and is renowned both in Japan and abroad, having long served as an important bridge in promoting friendship and exchange between Taiwan and Japan. He particularly recalled that following the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, the people of Taiwan generously contributed over JPY 20 billion in aid—an act of kindness that the Japanese people have never forgotten. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Taiwan and Japan have continued to support each other, further deepening the bonds of friendship between the two sides. House Member Tanaka also noted that with TSMC’s establishment of its plant in Kumamoto, new opportunities have emerged for the development of Japan’s technology industry. He added that the delegation, composed of members from the political, economic, and cultural sectors, fully embodies the diversity and vitality of Taiwan-Japan exchanges. The meeting was conducted in a cordial and amicable atmosphere. The meeting lasted approximately 30 minutes and concluded successfully with an exchange of gifts and a commemorative group photo.
