President Han: Overseas Taiwanese businesspeople unite as a family, working together for a better Taiwan.
Legislative Yuan President Daniel K.Y. Han (韓國瑜) hosted a luncheon at noon on September 18 in honor of a homecoming delegation from the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Oceania (TCCO). Also in attendance were TPP Legislator Tsai Chun-Chou, Vice President of the Legislative Yuan’s Association of Overseas Taiwanese Businessmen, and KMT Legislator Adm. Chen Yeong-Kang.
President Han began by extending a sincere welcome to the delegation and thanking Taiwanese businesspeople in Oceania for their longstanding contributions. President Han stated that Taiwan’s international profile has reached new heights over the past two years, with a steady stream of visits by political dignitaries from around the world and the number of delegations exceeding 600. As Taiwan’s technological achievements gain increasing prominence worldwide, they have also unexpectedly drawn the global technology community’s attention to Taiwanese Hokkien, a language that AI industry leaders such as Jensen Huang and Lisa Su both speak fluently.
President Han identified four areas in which Taiwan has particularly attracted the attention of the international community. The first is its high-tech industries, including semiconductors, and the second is its advanced medical sector. The third is Taiwan’s small- and medium-sized enterprises, which have become “hidden champions,” achieving global leadership in their respective fields. To illustrate the outstanding performance of Taiwanese enterprises, he cited the example of high-temperature-resistant screws made in Gangshan, Kaohsiung, and supplied for use in rockets for the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The fourth is Taiwan’s democratic system, built step by step through decades of effort. He called on overseas Taiwanese businesspeople and compatriots to stand united in safeguarding this hard-won achievement.
President Han also thanked Taiwanese businesspeople for continuing to give back to their local communities and support underprivileged groups in their countries of residence, thereby sharing Taiwan’s warmth and kindness with the world. In closing, he emphasized that Taiwan does not possess abundant natural resources, but has the determination to work hard and persevere. He stressed that Taiwan is the homeland of overseas Taiwanese businesspeople, so the more their homeland distinguishes itself, the greater the pride and esteem they will enjoy overseas. He urged overseas Taiwanese businesspeople to “look beyond political affiliations of blue, green, or white, and keep only love for Taiwan in their hearts” by treating one another as family, caring for one another, and offering mutual assistance, because politics is temporary, while the bonds among compatriots endure.
Speaking on behalf of Taiwanese businesspeople in Oceania, TCCO President Jay Chang thanked President Han and the legislators from across party lines for taking the time to receive the delegation. He noted that overseas Taiwanese businesspeople closely follow Taiwan’s development despite living overseas. He stated that they are very pleased to serve as a bridge between Taiwan and Oceania, bringing Taiwan’s outstanding industries, talent, and expertise overseas while bringing international business opportunities and information back to Taiwan. He added that overseas compatriots hope the Legislative Yuan will continue to pass legislation and approve budgets that benefit the country and its people, helping Taiwan continue to move forward. He concluded by sharing the theme of the TCCO’s 28th term, “Carrying Forward Our Legacy, Innovating for the Future,” and expressed the hope of maintaining close engagement with the Legislative Yuan.
The two sides then exchanged commemorative gifts, after which the luncheon formally began. Lasting approximately two hours, the luncheon proceeded in a warm and cordial atmosphere, with both sides enjoying the occasion to the fullest. Toward the end of the event, Legislator Tsai conveyed her sincere appreciation to the Taiwanese businesspeople present and wished them prosperity in their businesses and a safe and fruitful visit home, bringing the luncheon to a successful conclusion.
