On the afternoon of September 30, President Daniel K.Y. Han (韓國瑜) of the Legislative Yuan received a delegation led by Nancy Wen, 33rd-term President of the World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce (WTCC), along with other WTCC officers. President Han was joined by DPP Legislator Chung Chia-Pin and TPP Legislator Tsai Chun-Chou, Vice Presidents of the Legislative Yuan’s Association of Overseas Taiwanese Businessmen; KMT Legislator Adm. Chen Yeong-Kang; and others.
In his remarks, President Han first extended a warm welcome to the WTCC delegation. He noted that all three parties had sent their best legislators to attend, reflecting the Legislative Yuan’s cross-party support for overseas Taiwanese businesspeople.
President Han recalled that decades ago, many Taiwanese entrepreneurs left home with one-way tickets to build new lives overseas, enduring tremendous hardship along the way. He said that the stories of every individual and every family, in every country, were moving. Like seeds taking root in distant lands, they have built lives around the world while never losing their deep attachment to Taiwan. Whenever Taiwan has faced a crisis, President Han continued, overseas Taiwanese businesspeople and compatriots have always been quick to step forward with financial support and practical assistance. He cited disasters including the Hualien barrier-lake disaster, flooding in Tainan, and the 921 Earthquake. As Taiwan’s highest legislative body, he said, the Legislative Yuan wished to express its deepest respect for them.
President Han also emphasized that overseas Taiwanese businesspeople and compatriots should encourage the next generation to continue learning Mandarin Chinese, highlighting the distinctive nature of traditional Chinese characters as used in Taiwan. He noted that traditional Chinese characters can also be found in historic temples in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, reflecting a valuable cultural connection that he hopes can be preserved through collective efforts. He also encouraged the Overseas Community Affairs Council to continue promoting related courses. President Han added that he was pleased to learn that a WTCC event would be held in Africa next March, and said the Legislative Yuan would explore appropriate ways to offer its support.
In her remarks, WTCC President Wen said that the handover of the presidency and leadership team had only been completed the previous week, and that the delegation had come to visit the Legislative Yuan today. She thanked President Han and the legislators for receiving the delegation. Although WTCC members come from diverse backgrounds, she said, they remain closely united and unanimously support government policies. President Wen explained that she had brought new members to the Legislative Yuan for exchanges so the next generation could better understand the legislature’s efforts on behalf of overseas Taiwanese businesses. She also hoped the visit would strengthen their ties with Taiwan and encourage them to remain engaged with Taiwan’s affairs.
The two sides then exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including direct flight connections, promoting cultural exchanges overseas, and the development of Taiwanese businesses around the world. The meeting lasted approximately 40 minutes and concluded with President Han presenting commemorative gifts to the visitors, followed by a group photo. The atmosphere throughout the meeting was warm and cordial. (2026/09/30)
